A visit to ancient city of Herculaneum is like traveling back in time. You will live the atmosphere of everyday life of a small, elegant and refined Roman city.
According to myth, Herculaneum was built by Hercules on a volcanic spur overlooking the sea and was destroyed, along with other cities, by Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD: a blanket of mud and pyroclastic materials about 20 meters tall, which solidified year after year, preserving the remains of this city in an extraordinary way.
Our visit begins by the Cardine III and continues along the ancient streets of urban fabric of the city built in the image of Naples in order to follow model of a Greek city. We’ll visit some public buildings on the decumanus maximum, such as the Hall of Augustales, monumental basilica and gym, some private houses like the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and attached shop, central baths, bakeries, tabernae and shops up to the arches, which opened onto beach and where part of Herculaneum citizens tried to find shelter during the eruption.
In Herculaneum, volcanic muds sealed organic materials like wooden structures (doors, windows, lofts and internal stairs that led to upper floors), preventing air from penetrating and dissolving them: these are unique items that help build a complete picture of residential constructions and Herculaneum’s daily life.
Two fishermen -father and son – heading to a food store, a legal dispute between neighbors, a murder happened in a shop and unveiled almost 18 centuries later, are some of the stories that will accompany you during the visit of city of Herculaneum.
Visit of excavations of Herculaneum can be combined with a trip to Pompeii, Sorrento or Mount Vesuvius: don’t hesitate to ask for information on possible changes to this tour and book now.
