Art and history, myths and mysteries, stories and anecdotes, colors and traditions, perfumes and flavors of local food, and much more: this is Napoli… and that’s amore! “Naples is a unique city, known as the “soul of Italy”. With its people, its ambience and atmosphere chaotic and full of spirit, there is always something new to discover and experience in terms of art and food”.
A touring itinerary in the ancient heart of the city, along the lower decumano, which Neapolitans call Spaccanapoli, will allow to discover squares and noble palaces, churches with cloisters and bell towers, hidden treasures and then old alleys and typical shops.
Start from Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, with homonymous Baroque church that features mysterious facade in diamond-shaped rustication, to Monastery of Santa Chiara and its fine majolica cloister.
We’ll continue towards Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, favorite place of Neapolitan nobility: on one side you can find homonymous Gothic and Baroque basilica, on the other side Palazzo Corigliano and behind it is the Chapel of San Severo, where you can marvel the Veiled Christ by sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino. Mysterious stories and religious beliefs surround these places. From Piazzetta Nilo, so-called Corpo di Napoli, we walk through Via San Biagio dei Librai, one of three “decumani” of ancient Greco-Roman city and also most tourism-relate: we’ll pop into artisan shops, antique dealers and sfogliatella or babà shops, before reaching a crossing with famous San Gregorio Armeno, well-known street of nativity scenes.
At the end of this old lane we’ll find the Complex of San Lorenzo Maggiore, built on the remains of an early Christian basilica built over Greco-Roman Neapolis.
Walking along Via dei Tribunali, we’ll arrive to Cathedral and Chapel of San Gennaro’s Treasure, where you can marvel sacred art treasures donated by sovereigns who ruled Kingdom of Naples.
We could go on for hours: historic center hides countless art treasures, but it’s time for shopping or pop into a typical pizzeria and enjoy the true Neapolitan pizza.
This tour can last half day, but you can add a visit to National Archaeological Museum of Naples in the afternoon and admire sculptures, frescoes, mosaics coming from excavations of Vesuvian cities and much more.
