National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) is probably world’s most important archaeological museum that holds many precious finds of Greek and Roman age, artistic heritage recovered from Vesuvian cities destroyed by eruption of 79 AD.
Although not a palace like Capodimonte, the impressive structure of Archaeological Museum, that features among others the amazing “Salone della Meridiana” extended over 10.000 square feet, is absolutely marvelous. Structure was built as Cavallerizza in year 1585 and later transformed into a museum by sovereigns of Bourbon house in first half of eighteenth century.
Its spacious rooms hold some of most beautiful statues from Farnese collection, such as Hercules and monumental group of Toro, and finds from Herculaneum and Pompeii, most notably Villa dei Papiri by Lucio Calpurnio Pisone and inestimable decorative frescoes and mosaics of Pompeii that show a wonderful stylistic richness.
The museum holds a spectacular model of Pompeii city, a collection of ancient coins and jewels from Pompeii and first ever Egyptian collection in history of European collections.
A visit to the Museum is an ideal completion for enthusiasts who want to know immense artistic heritage of Southern Italy in Greek-Roman period and delve into or begin to study events related to history of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvian cities.
The visit to Museum can be combined with a trip to excavations of Pompeii or Herculaneum: don’t hesitate to ask for information about possible changes to this tour and book now.
