Positano is a unique place in the world, a jewel of spontaneous architecture set on a rock overlooking the sea. Bunches of colored houses, sometimes with a cubic aspect are sprawling down steep hillsides descending to the beach, and are connected by tiny lanes and long stairways.
If you come to Positano along the coastal road from Amalfi or Sorrento, you can enjoy sudden panoramic views of small towns. Disembarking from the sea is a unique experience that fills your eyes and soul with beauty.
Around the first century AD, Romans came to Positano by the sea and built a sumptuous maritime villa for their refined idleness. According to some historians, the villa in Positano belonged to Posides Claudi Cesaris, freedman of emperor Claudius, which name Posidianum was extended to whole town.
Many artists, writers and movie stars visited or lived in Positano for long time: Walter Benjamin, Paul Klee, John Steinbeck, Liz Taylor, Igor Stravinsky, Franco Zeffirelli, to name a few, were fascinated by this charming and “wild” fishing village that became one of the most popular places of Italy.
From Spiaggia Grande or Torre della Sponda, we’ll reach the Church of S. Maria Assunta, rebuilt at the end of 1700 over the ruins of a medieval Abbey, using the remains of the Roman Villa, where amazing wall paintings are preserved.
Along the streets leading to the sea, between houses leaning on each other, you can find Villa Sersale, Palazzo Murat and other eighteenth-century villas transformed into luxury hotels without sacrificing their ancient charm.
You can see numerous craft shops and boutiques here: one of the reasons of Positano’s popularity is production of beachwear with colorful drapes, bags, linen or cotton pareos and bikinis: in the sixties, the town discovered and experimented the interesting phenomenon of “Positano Fashion”.
Positano is also known for myths, legends, anecdotes, stories and gossip.
