Stories of castles, towers and palaces, stories of ceramics and mosaics, stories of princes, dukes, ambassadors and poets: Vietri sul Mare and Salerno are definitively worth a guided visit!
They all came from the sea, from the sea facing the beach of Marina di Vietri: Romans vessels founding Salernum in 197 BC, and later building a maritime villa in Veteri in place of ancient Marcina. In Middle Age galleys, galleons and then tartans were employed for maritime trade with near Amalfi and farthest coasts of Mediterranean, together with Saracens, who invaded Amalfi’s Coast many times.
Our tour starts from Vietri sul Mare, strongly related to ceramics tradition: during XV century, over the remains of a Roman frigidarium they built a faenzera, a ceramic furnace later found intact along with many samples of dishes and pottery. Starting from the main square, you can find the baroque façade of Palazzo della Guardia on one side and some eighteenth-century palaces along Corso Umberto, which will take us to church of San Giovanni Battista, that features a dome enriched with majolica.
All around you can find many pottery shops and galleries with unique decorations and colors that will delight your sight. You can attend a workshop or visit the Museum of Ceramics of Villa Guariglia, located in the nearby Raito village.
In a few minutes you can drive to Salerno, strolling through Villa Comunale and continuing along ancient lanes of historic center, to visit the church of S. Pietro a Corte, Palazzo Fruscione, via dei Mercanti, the baroque church of San Giorgio and the amazing Cathedral of San Matteo. Its bell tower, bronze doors, two ambos, XIII-century mosaics and Crypt with frescoes done by Corenzio, make of it the best historical-artistic synthesis of the city.
The old city of Salerno hides more treasures at Giardino della Minerva, Archaeological Museum and Diocesan Museum: that’s why you can customize your tour according to your needs or time availability.
